Anthropic taps SpaceX AI data center to expand Claude capacity

by May 6, 2026
written by May 6, 2026

Anthropic has signed an agreement with SpaceX to significantly expand its computing capacity, as demand for its Claude artificial intelligence software continues to accelerate.

Under the deal, Anthropic will access computing resources from SpaceX’s large-scale data center in Memphis, known as Colossus 1.

The companies said the partnership would “substantially” increase Anthropic’s compute capacity and allow it to raise usage limits across its AI products.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Colossus 1 boosts compute capacity

Colossus 1 is described as an advanced AI supercomputer equipped with more than 220,000 GPUs supplied by NVIDIA.

The system includes H100, H200, and GB200 accelerators and is designed to handle large language model training, multimodal systems, scientific simulations, and generative AI workloads.

The agreement is expected to provide Anthropic with more than 300 megawatts of additional computing capacity within a month.

The company said it will use the expanded resources to improve performance and availability for Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers.

Anthropic also announced product updates alongside the deal, including doubling Claude Code’s five-hour rate limits for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans.

It is also removing peak-hour limit reductions for Pro and Max accounts and increasing API rate limits for Claude Opus models.

Strategic alignment in a competitive AI landscape

The partnership brings together two players that are also competitors in the broader race to develop advanced AI systems.

Elon Musk’s AI venture xAI, now part of SpaceX, has focused heavily on building data center infrastructure and acquiring chips to support AI workloads, even as it continues to develop its software capabilities.

Although xAI is still catching up in coding capabilities, it has taken an early lead in securing large-scale compute resources.

The company has been expanding data center operations in Memphis and Mississippi and has raised capital to support chip acquisition and infrastructure buildout.

The arrangement also builds on previous collaborations involving xAI.

The startup had earlier agreed to provide computing resources to AI coding company Cursor as part of a broader partnership.

Expanding infrastructure to meet surging demand

Anthropic’s move reflects intensifying demand for AI services, particularly tools used for coding and automation tasks.

The company said demand for its Claude platform has risen sharply in recent months as more customers adopt AI-driven workflows.

The SpaceX agreement adds to a growing portfolio of infrastructure partnerships.

Anthropic has previously secured large-scale compute arrangements with major technology firms, including up to 5 gigawatts with Amazon, with nearly 1 gigawatt expected by the end of 2026.

It also has a 5 gigawatt agreement with Alphabet’s Google and Broadcom starting in 2027, alongside a partnership with Microsoft and NVIDIA that includes $30 billion of Azure capacity.

Additionally, Anthropic is part of a $50 billion investment initiative in American AI infrastructure with Fluidstack.
