McConnell is out of rehab, but his absence has stunted a key Republican priority

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is officially back home after weeks of receiving medical care, but it’s still not clear when he will return to the Senate.

McConnell, in a statement released by his office Thursday afternoon, revealed that he had been “discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home” with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.

The longtime lawmaker has been absent from the public eye since June after suffering a fall at his Washington, D.C. Late last month, he disclosed that he had been discharged from the hospital, but was not yet “medically cleared” to return to work.

MCCONNELL OUT OF HOSPITAL, STILL NOT ‘MEDICALLY CLEARED’ TO RETURN TO SENATE

“Elaine and I are grateful for the many well-wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff,” McConnell said.

“On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business,” he continued.

His return to the Senate, however, remains a mystery.

And the upper chamber is still currently in session, mired in negotiations moving at a glacial pace to pass a series of key agenda items before jet-setting from Washington for the rest of August. Whether McConnell returns in early September when the Senate is set to clock back in remains in the air, too.

MCCONNELL’S ABSENCE PUTS TRUMP AGENDA AT RISK AS KENTUCKY SUCCESSION QUESTIONS GROW

Fox News Digital did not immediately receive comment on McConnell’s return to the upper chamber.

For weeks, his absence has had little effect on Senate business other than speculation that the day would come when his vote was needed, and he wasn’t there.

That changed Thursday morning when Senate Republicans on the Senate Agriculture Committee, which McConnell is a member of, tried to move a revamped, sweeping farm package through committee. Senate Democrats voted against the package over concerns that the food stamp provisions in the legislation would put more of the cost of the program onto states.

COLLINS DROPS THE HAMMER ON TRUMP’S PICK TO LEAD DOJ, JEOPARDIZING PATH TO CONFIRMATION

But without McConnell, nor Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., the package failed to survive in committee.

Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark., the chair of the panel, plans to bring the package back up for consideration in September when the Senate returns.

It is also unclear if President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Justice (DOJ), acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, can survive the confirmation process without McConnell. Republicans can only afford to lose one more vote thanks to his absence and Sen. Susan Collins’, R-Maine, decision to buck Trump’s top prosecutor.

Speculation over McConnell’s health, and inconsistent clarity on his condition from his office, sparked an intense and sometimes fantastical rumor mill about the longest-serving Republican leader in Senate history.

It also spurred questions over whether Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, would call a special election to replace him. Beshear argued earlier this week that the Aug. 3 deadline circulating online had no legal bearing on his decision, but did note that without McConnell, Republicans’ agenda would suffer.

“Worth a reminder: Right now, there’s one less vote for the SAVE Act, Trump’s war with Iran, or the potential replacement of a SCOTUS justice,” Beshear said.
