Anthropic IPO will benefit these two mega-cap stocks

by September 16, 2026
written by September 16, 2026

Anthropic’s confidential June S-1 filing has set up what could be the year’s defining public offering, with Reuters reporting a target listing window in mid-October.

Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and JPMorgan are leading the offering, while Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao has been holding early investor meetings.

Private chatter floats valuation numbers approaching $2 trillion – roughly double the $965 billion mark set during its Series H round in May.

Beyond providing a test for AI valuations, Anthropic’s IPO will enrich Amazon and Alphabet, which hold multi-billion-dollar equity stakes alongside long-term cloud infrastructure contracts with the startup.

Amazon’s dual-engine exposure

Amazon holds an estimated 15% to 21% equity stake in Anthropic, built through a structured capital layout that includes an early $8 billion tranche, $5 billion added in April 2026, and up to $20 billion tied to commercial milestones.

In return, Anthropic committed over $100 billion to Amazon Web Services and Trainium hardware over the next decade.

The financial dividend is already landing on Amazon’s balance sheet: Q2 2026 non-operating income contained roughly $53 billion in mark-to-market adjustments from Anthropic, pushing GAAP earnings per share far past consensus estimates.

For investors, this exposure means Amazon increasingly trades not just as an e-commerce and cloud platform, but as a leveraged holding company for premier private AI equity.

Wall Street currently has a consensus Buy rating on AMZN stock.

Alphabet’s strategic hedge

Alphabet maintains a 14% to 15% position in Anthropic – a stake contractually capped to manage the competitive tension between Google’s internal Gemini models and Anthropic’s Claude.

Despite this rivalry, Alphabet committed up to $40 billion in additional funding in April 2026, securing a massive commercial lock-in: Anthropic pledged roughly $200 billion toward Google Cloud, including access to up to 1 million Tensor Processing Units.

Markups on the holding helped drive Alphabet’s record $112.1 billion in Q2 2026 net income.

Because this position carries a smaller proportional weight relative to Alphabet’s overall market capitalization than Amazon’s stake, the core strategic payoff rests less on pure equity expansion and more on guaranteed Google Cloud TPU utilization.

Wall Street currently has a consensus Buy rating on GOOGL shares.

Paper windfalls and market pricing

Both balance sheets share a fundamental vulnerability: these earnings are unrealized, mark-to-market gains.

Any softness in Anthropic’s final IPO pricing or initial trading will reverse reported windfalls and trigger non-operating write-downs.

This structure creates a feedback loop for mega-cap tech valuations.

An aggressive listing print will inflate near-term earnings metrics for both corporate backers, anchoring public equity multiples directly to private markups.

Conversely, if public markets price Anthropic below private investor expectations, the resulting earnings contraction will test how much of Big Tech’s recent outperformance was driven by core operating cash flows versus paper accounting adjustments.
