Wall Street futures trade flat today: 5 things to know before the market opens

by September 23, 2026
written by September 23, 2026

US stock futures were little changed on Wednesday as investors looked beyond the Nasdaq’s second straight record close towards US-China talks, Middle East diplomacy and fresh signals on the economy.

Dow and S&P 500 futures were up about 0.1% around 5:10 am ET, while Nasdaq 100 futures edged roughly 0.05% higher.

Brent crude remained below $100 a barrel and the 10-year Treasury yield hovered around 4.96%, preserving some of the relief that has supported technology shares this week.

September flash PMI data and Fed Governor Michael Barr’s remarks will provide the next tests before Thursday’s Trump-Xi summit.

5 things to know before Wall Street opens

1. Trump-Xi summit moves to the centre of the market

Chinese President Xi Jinping is due in Washington ahead of Thursday’s meeting with President Donald Trump, with trade, AI, rare earths, Taiwan and Iran expected to feature prominently.

The immediate market hope is relatively modest: extend the existing trade truce and avoid another escalation in technology restrictions.

Analysts noted that expectations for sweeping deals remain low, but even limited progress could reduce one source of risk for semiconductor and megacap technology stocks.

2. Oil below $100 keeps the inflation trade calmer

Brent remained just below $100 as improving Saudi supply prospects and US-Iran contacts reduced concern about an immediate Middle East supply shock.

Saudi Arabia has been testing its repaired East-West pipeline, while Iran has signalled that Hormuz could reopen under certain conditions.

The 10-year Treasury yield was around 4.96%. Capital.com strategist Daniela Hathorn told MarketWatch this week that oil’s effect on inflation expectations has become an important driver of both yields and equity valuations.

3. Nasdaq records are hiding a more divided market

The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.5% on Tuesday for a second consecutive record close, helped by Micron and other AI-linked shares.

But leadership is becoming more complicated. Financial stocks sold off sharply on Tuesday, with JPMorgan among the major decliners, while companies exposed to potential AI disruption, including online platforms and consumer-service businesses, also came under pressure.

That makes Wednesday a test of whether the AI rally can broaden beyond chips and megacap technology.

4. US PMI data will test the soft-landing argument

S&P Global’s September flash manufacturing PMI is due at 9:45 am ET, with economists looking for another expansionary reading around 53.5.

August’s composite PMI stood at 56, signalling the strongest US private-sector growth since 2022.

Another strong reading could reassure equity investors about demand but also reinforce the Fed’s argument that the economy can tolerate higher rates.

5. Michael Barr could shift the next Fed-hike debate

Fed Governor Michael Barr speaks on the economic outlook and housing at 10:05 am ET.

Markets have increasingly priced another increase before year-end after last week’s quarter-point hike.

Short-term Treasury yields remain elevated, reflecting concern that resilient demand and persistent inflation may require more restraint.

Barr’s comments therefore matter less for Wednesday’s open than for whether investors continue treating near-5% Treasury yields as a temporary obstacle or a longer-lasting challenge to equity valuations.
