Nvidia, AMD and Intel stocks fall premarket: why smart money is trimming chip bets

by October 13, 2026
written by October 13, 2026

Nvidia and AMD stocks slipped again in Tuesday’s premarket trading after four consecutive declines, while Intel stock briefly bucked the move before reversing as pressure spread across the chip sector.

Nvidia and AMD were both notably lower early Tuesday. Intel edged higher, then moved lower as the semiconductor sell-off deepened.

The split highlighted different expectations, as Nvidia and AMD must prove fresh AI announcements translate into revenue, while Intel is being judged on whether its turnaround can deliver.

Nvidia and AMD now have to prove AI announcements make money

Both Nvidia and AMD fell for a fourth consecutive session on Monday despite unveiling new AI technology.

AMD dropped 2.3% after presenting its Helion rack blueprint at the Open Compute Project summit, while Nvidia lost 1.3% after revealing open-standard designs around its upcoming Vera Rubin platform with partners including Meta, Cisco and Google.

The problem is not that AI demand has disappeared. Investors are becoming less willing to reward technical announcements before they generate purchase orders.

Rex Financial head of research Bill Birmingham told MarketWatch that “there is still a way to go before these announcements turn into purchase orders.”

That distinction matters because enormous growth is already embedded in Nvidia and AMD valuations. Another promising platform reinforces the long-term story, but carries less immediate value when investors are questioning how quickly AI infrastructure spending will generate returns.

Intel is being judged against a different expectations bar

Intel’s brief relative strength should not be mistaken for evidence that investors suddenly prefer it to Nvidia or AMD.

Nvidia and AMD are being judged on whether exceptional AI growth can keep accelerating.

Intel is being judged on whether server CPU demand improves, its foundry strategy gains customers and management can execute a turnaround Wall Street still considers unfinished.

Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya maintained a Buy rating on Intel on Monday. Susquehanna analyst Christopher Rolland reiterated Hold but raised his price target to $115 from $80.

That mixed response captures Intel’s setup. There is room for optimism because expectations remain lower, but analysts are hardly treating the turnaround as complete.

Intel fell 3.2% on Monday and later slipped again in Tuesday premarket trading, showing that different expectations can offer temporary support without providing immunity from a sector-wide sell-off.

Five percent yields are forcing the AI trade into a show-me phase

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 2.7% on Monday before selling spread across Asia on Tuesday.

Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and other AI suppliers dropped sharply as investors reconsidered the sustainability of the infrastructure boom.

The US 10-year Treasury yield also remains above 5%, increasing financing costs and reducing the present value of future growth.

Marc Velan, head of investments at Lucerne Asset Management, told Reuters that “we’re entering the next phase of the AI cycle, where markets increasingly focus on monetisation and returns on invested capital.”

He stressed that this does not necessarily mark the end of the AI trade, but the burden of proof is rising.
