Cleveland-Cliffs stock: is there any further upside left?

by October 19, 2026
written by October 19, 2026

Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF) stock rallied on Monday after the steelmaker delivered a return to quarterly profitability and an unexpectedly ambitious earnings outlook.

As investors reassessed how much the company could earn in 2027, CLF broke above its 20-day moving average (MA), indicating bulls have taken back control of the near-term.

The immediate question is whether this earnings reset can support sustained recovery in Cleveland-Cliffs shares – or whether buyers are pricing in too much improvement too quickly.

What is driving Cleveland-Cliffs stock higher?

The biggest catalyst is management’s forecast for more than $4 billion in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) in 2027.

That comfortably exceeds the roughly $2.5 billion Wall Street had anticipated.

Newly signed customer contracts and favorable steel-price assumptions underpin the projection, while US tariffs are helping support domestic pricing.

The quarterly numbers offered evidence that the recovery is already taking shape.

Cleveland-Cliffs reported adjusted earnings of 28 cents a share, beating the 21-cent FactSet consensus.

Revenue increased to $5.61 billion from $4.73 billion a year ago, although it missed expectations.

Higher selling prices and increased shipments helped drive the improvement, giving those invested in CLF stock something more tangible than an optimistic forecast to reward.

Is it already too late to invest in CLF shares?

Monday’s jump does not automatically exhaust the investment opportunity – but it does raise the standard for what happens next.

A stronger earnings outlook can justify a higher valuation only if the underlying assumptions prove durable. Crucially, management’s 2027 projection depends partly on prevailing price forecasts.

Signed contracts provide visibility, but they do not eliminate exposure to the steel cycle.

Cleveland-Cliffs also expects Q4 pricing benefits to face offsets from maintenance outages, seasonality, input costs, and incentive compensation.

In short, the operating recovery deserves attention, while an aggressive purchase immediately after a sharp rally leaves less room for disappointment.

Investors evaluating an entry should distinguish between sustainable earnings power and profits flattered by unusually favorable market conditions. One strong session cannot settle that valuation question.

What comes next – cash flow and debt reduction in focus

The next decisive test is whether improving operations translate into a healthier balance sheet.

CEO Lourenco Goncalves expects stronger Q4 free cash flow (FCF) and property-sale proceeds to support substantial debt reduction.

Management remains focused on bringing net debt below 2.5x EBITDA by the middle of 2027. Cleveland-Cliffs ended September with $3.2 billion in total liquidity.

For shareholders, the quality of that progress matters. Property disposals can accelerate repayments, but recurring cash generation would offer stronger evidence of lasting financial improvement.

Lower borrowings could reduce financing pressure and give the company greater flexibility when industry conditions soften.

That makes debt repayment and cash conversion useful measures of the turnaround’s credibility.

Investors now have a concrete way to judge whether Monday’s enthusiasm is developing into a more durable investment case.
