Here’s how long it will take for quantum computing to become a reality

Quantum computers already exist, but the race to make them reliably useful for demanding commercial applications has a more specific deadline: 2029, according to Quantinuum CEO Rajeeb Hazra.

Speaking with CNBC on October 21st, Hazra said a breakthrough in quantum error correction strengthens the company’s confidence in delivering Apollo, its planned universal fault-tolerant computer, that year.

“We are very confident now of realizing the vision in 2029,” he said.

That puts Quantinuum’s next major milestone roughly three years away, although translating laboratory progress into dependable business results remains a substantial undertaking.

Why this week’s error-correction breakthrough matters

Quantum computing’s promise depends on keeping fragile quantum information reliable long enough to complete useful calculations.

Errors can otherwise undermine results before a machine finishes its work.

Quantinuum’s October 19 announcement reported 99.9995% logical memory fidelity on its Helios computer, equivalent to approximately five uncorrectable errors per million error-checking cycles.

Crucially, that measures protected quantum memory rather than establishing that every operation in a commercial application achieves the same accuracy.

Hazra described the CNBC headline figure as “5 errors in a million operations.” The commercial significance lies in extending how much dependable computation a system can perform.

Hazra pointed to drug discovery, new materials and supply-chain optimization as intended applications, framing error correction as the bridge between quantum computing’s theoretical potential and customers’ practical needs.

What must happen before Apollo arrives in 2029?

Better accuracy is one requirement. Quantinuum must also manufacture larger systems, integrate its components, and preserve performance as computational demands increase.

“Our scaling path is very clear to us,” Hazra told CNBC, citing supply-chain preparations and strategic relationships with manufacturing partners.

He said that expansion draws on innovations familiar from microelectronics, including larger chips, increasingly complex packaging, optics and cryogenics.

The challenge is turning those ingredients into machines that customers can deploy and use consistently.

Importantly, 2029 remains a company target.

Quantinuum’s announcement acknowledges that experimental results might not translate to larger systems, logical computation, or commercial use, and that Apollo could miss its expected timeline.

The latest result strengthens the technical case for that schedule; it does not establish that the remaining engineering and commercial work is complete.

Quantum’s arrival could strengthen AI rather than replace it

Hazra’s vision extends beyond a standalone quantum machine. He sees quantum processors working alongside artificial intelligence and increasingly capable high-performance computing infrastructure.

“We actually see AI and quantum as very complementary,” he said.

In that model, AI could generate hypotheses while quantum computers help evaluate selected problems through more accurate measurements and simulations.

For businesses researching molecules or materials, the potential attraction is a tighter connection between proposing possibilities and testing their underlying behavior.

Those benefits still need demonstration in commercially valuable workflows.

Apollo’s arrival would therefore represent a milestone rather than an instant transformation across every industry.

As of October 21st, the clearest answer is that Quantinuum is targeting 2029 for its fault-tolerant system.

Whether that becomes a broader quantum revolution will depend on what customers can accomplish with it.
