CoreWeave, Nebius, Iren stocks fall as Musk warns 200 neoclouds could collapse

written by October 26, 2026

Shares of major neocloud companies CoreWeave CRWV, Nebius and Iren fell during premarket trading on Monday after Elon Musk warned that more than 200 firms in the sector could face failures and consolidation as access to financing tightens.

Iren shares fell roughly 3%, while CoreWeave dropped around 5% and Nebius declined more than 2%.

The latest losses add to a sharp sell-off in AI infrastructure stocks as investors reassess the cost of building data centres and the debt required to fund their expansion.

“As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers,” Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, said in a post on X on Sunday.

“That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many,” he added.

Musk was responding to a post by venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya, who said: “Neoclouds are disorganized and poorly capitalized. Some are definitely better than others however.”

Neocloud stocks face mounting pressure

Neocloud providers rent computing capacity, including access to graphics processing units (GPUs), to companies developing and deploying artificial intelligence models.

Their growth has been fuelled by surging demand for computing power, but the capital-intensive nature of the business has left many providers reliant on external financing.

The latest pressure has been particularly severe for publicly traded companies.

The sell-off gathered momentum earlier this month after spreads on CoreWeave’s five-year credit default swaps reached levels generally associated with financial distress.

Yields on the company’s bonds also climbed, reflecting growing investor concern about its borrowing costs and ability to finance its expansion.

Adding to the unease, Gartner research indicated that 80% of neocloud providers would most likely cease independent operations by 2030.

CoreWeave has lost around 36% over the past month, while Nebius has fallen more than 31%.

Iren has declined approximately 40% over the same period.

Investors are increasingly questioning whether companies can generate sufficient cash flow from AI computing services to justify their substantial spending on Nvidia chips, data centres and supporting infrastructure.

The concern is not necessarily that demand for AI computing will disappear, but that many providers may struggle to finance the capacity needed to serve it.

CoreWeave’s debt raises questions over growth

CoreWeave has become a focal point of these concerns because of the scale of its financing commitments.

The company has raised more than $35 billion this year through chip-backed loans, high-yield bonds, convertible bonds and share sales.

Its debt and lease obligations totalled approximately $52 billion at the end of June, highlighting the financial commitments required to expand its data centre network.

The company has substantial contracted demand to support that investment.

Its revenue backlog reached approximately $104 billion at the end of June, and it added more than $25 billion in new customer commitments early in the third quarter.

However, converting those commitments into revenue requires significant spending on data centres and GPUs.

Investors must weigh the value of CoreWeave’s customer contracts against the capital expenditure, financing costs and execution risks involved in delivering the promised computing capacity.

Nvidia chief sees strong demand but limited capital

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang offered a more constructive view of demand for the sector last week, while also acknowledging that financing is becoming a constraint.

“If you look at the fundamentals, the demand for the neo clouds is off the charts,” Huang told CNBC’s Arjun Kharpal on the sidelines of the company’s GTC conference in Berlin on Thursday, adding that capabilities are “extraordinary.”

“What is missing in the middle is the working capital to fuel that growth… because there’s just so much demand across so many sectors of AI, there’s a scarcity of capital,” Huang said.

The comments highlight the tension facing the industry: demand for AI computing may be robust, but the availability and cost of capital could determine which companies can expand profitably.

Milk Road AI analyst Melvin agreed with Musk’s broader assessment that most neocloud companies would not survive, but said Nebius, CoreWeave and Iren would make it through the consolidation.

Nebius has sought to distinguish its funding model from that of providers facing greater pressure over debt.

Chief Revenue Officer Marc Boroditsky told CNBC at Nvidia’s GTC Berlin conference last Wednesday that the company was less exposed to market pressures affecting other providers because it did not carry the same kind of debt as CoreWeave.

He pointed to equity raises, convertible offerings and upfront customer payments as Nebius’s principal funding sources.

The company has also consistently secured higher upfront payments from customers to support future capital expenditure.

Boroditsky cited SpaceX’s latest earnings as evidence of strong demand for AI computing capacity, saying computing supply “continues to fall far behind demand.”

He added that Nebius could sell all its planned 2027 capacity immediately at current prices if it made that capacity available to its sales team.

Analysts cut price targets as AI return concerns grow

Despite the long-term demand outlook, analysts have become more cautious about valuations, financing requirements and the time needed for AI investments to generate returns.

Raymond James lowered its price target on CoreWeave to $75 from $125 while maintaining an Outperform rating.

The lowered PT still represents an upside 38% from Friday’s close.

Analyst Josh Beck cited concerns about the broader AI investment landscape and examined variables including GPU pricing, useful life, interest rates and financing sources in a scenario analysis.

The firm said CoreWeave remained among the best-positioned neoclouds to navigate a more cautious credit environment.

It pointed to the company’s leading GPU performance through ClusterMAX and MLPerf, its scaling execution and contracted footprint, and its ability to temporarily pace deployment.

Raymond James also identified CoreWeave’s approximately $500 million in non-GPU annual recurring revenue as an underappreciated factor.

However, the firm said concerns about the AI trade were unlikely to fade until investors gained more comprehensive visibility into returns on investment at AI laboratory companies.

Its analysis of publicly traded AI companies suggested that Wall Street capital expenditure estimates could exceed operating cash flow by approximately $400 billion in 2027, potentially requiring substantial equity and debt issuance.

Piper Sandler also reduced its price target on Nebius by 22% to $185 from $237 last Wednesday, while maintaining a Neutral rating, according to The Fly.

The firm cited concerns about AI demand, returns on invested capital and financing after several AI cloud stocks recorded losses exceeding 25%.

Piper lowered terminal valuation multiples across the sector, warning that stocks could remain “in the penalty box” until free cash flow improves or financing becomes clearer.

Still, the firm recommended gradually building positions during the pullback and reiterated CoreWeave as its preferred name, describing financing concerns around the company as overblown relative to its assessment.

HSBC Global Investment Research remained more bearish.

The bank reiterated its Reduce rating and $39 price target on CoreWeave.

It kept its earnings estimates unchanged, leaving them significantly below Wall Street consensus forecasts.

HSBC cited debt-market pressures and moderating revenue from large language models as factors exacerbating structural concerns.
