Why Elon Musk thinks most of the 200-plus AI cloud firms could fail

by October 26, 2026
written by October 26, 2026

Elon Musk has warned that most AI cloud companies could struggle to survive as mounting debt and tightening lending conditions threaten to shake up the rapidly growing industry.

The warning comes even as SpaceX says it has secured $40 billion in financing to expand its own AI infrastructure business.

Neoclouds rent computing power to AI developers, often borrowing heavily to build data centres. Musk says lenders are retreating from businesses without other revenue sources.

However, SpaceX can lean on its Starlink broadband and rocket-launch operations. Demand for computing capacity remains strong, but creditors question which operators can turn that growth into cash.

Why SpaceX can borrow while rivals face tougher terms

Musk attributed the claimed financing to SpaceX’s investment-grade rating and revenue outside AI. He said the debt, primarily callable, would fund Nvidia graphics processors arriving in the first half of 2027.

The closing remains disputed. Bloomberg reported that Goldman Sachs-led bankers and investors led by Apollo Global Management were still discussing pricing late Sunday. The proposed borrowing involves an off-balance-sheet vehicle, but final terms remain unconfirmed.

SpaceX has more income streams than cloud specialists. Third-quarter revenue surged 161% to $14.58 billion, including $7.56 billion from its AI business, according to company results.

Yet spending remains formidable, as fourth-quarter capital expenditure is expected to reach $35 billion to $40 billion, separate from the GPU financing Musk described.

“Need for additional financing remains a key overhang for sentiment, especially given the recent neocloud debt saga,” Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said in an October 20 note.

Jonas projects $230 billion in further SpaceX debt between 2027 and 2029. Access to lenders, in other words, does not make the investment painless.

Why Elon Musk sees a shakeout among neoclouds

Operators including CoreWeave and Nebius have rushed to install processors and secure electricity, expecting sustained AI demand. That model needs affordable borrowing and rapid revenue generation.

Both are increasingly uncertain, as higher yields increase interest bills, while construction delays can leave chips idle while debt costs accumulate. Even strong customer demand may not generate cash quickly enough to service loans.

Musk says financing has become almost inaccessible to operators lacking meaningful revenue outside AI data centres.

He predicts widespread failures and mergers among more than 200 neoclouds, although those are his assessments. He ruled out buying struggling competitors.

CoreWeave’s falling bond prices have become a warning sign for the wider industry, though they do not establish that its business will fail.

“This will be a Game of Thrones battle in the tech world to secure compute power,” Yorkville Ives analyst Dan Ives said, according to Stocktwits on October 25. He expects another 800 to 1,000 US data centres over the coming years.

Strong AI demand does not guarantee easy financing

Blackstone president Jon Gray offers a different reading of the pressure. Discussing CoreWeave on CNBC’s Squawk Box on October 22, he said: “They’ll find a way through it, but that’s the challenge they face. The underlying business is actually quite strong.”

CoreWeave faces substantial debt: CNBC put total debt at about $51.6 billion, including roughly $35 billion in notes, bonds and loans. That financing challenge exists despite demand for computing capacity.

If that demand persists, operators capable of refinancing debt, securing power and delivering projects on schedule could gain market share as weaker competitors retreat.

But strong orders offer little protection to a company that cannot finance construction or manage interest costs.

The distinction also applies to SpaceX. Its diversified revenue may buy time, not immunity, as lenders demand higher returns even from stronger borrowers.
