Is it worth buying the dip in Innodata stock today?

by October 27, 2026
written by October 27, 2026

Innodata (INOD) shares plunged over 25% on Tuesday morning as reports of substantial layoffs rattled confidence in the artificial intelligence (AI) data specialist.

Nearly 550 employees in India reportedly lost their jobs, with cuts also reported in the Philippines; the company hasn’t, however, confirmed the overall scale of the reductions.

For those invested in Innodata stock, the immediate question is whether the upheaval reflects a temporary project adjustment or a more troubling slowdown in customer demand.

Why buying Innodata stock immediately looks premature

The concern is what prompted the layoffs. According to media reporting on a termination email, an affected employee’s assignment was being scaled down.

That raises a revenue question: if customer workloads are shrinking, lower payroll expenses may only partially offset the lost business; and INOD’s customer concentration makes that uncertainty particularly consequential.

Its two largest customers accounted for 37% and 34% of second-quarter revenue – 71% combined. Although reliance on its biggest account had fallen, dependence on two clients remains substantial.

Investors should, therefore, resist treating the sell-off in INOD shares as an automatic bargain.

Before buying aggressively, they need clarity on which programs were affected, whether work is shifting elsewhere, and whether replacement assignments can absorb the disruption.

Strong profitability keeps INOD shares recovery case alive

On the flip side, there’s a credible business behind the battered share price.

Innodata’s second-quarter revenue increased 58% year-on-year to $92.1 million, while net income roughly doubled to $14.4 million.

Adjusted EBITDA reached $25.4 million – equivalent to 27.5% of revenue.

In August, management maintained its forecast for full-year revenue growth of at least 40%.

That forecast predates today’s layoff reports.

Those results suggest INOD entered the current uncertainty with meaningful earnings power.

They also explain why dismissing the stock outright could prove costly if the affected work represents a limited disruption.

However, Innodata shares’ valuation still demands scrutiny.

At about $44, shares cost around 27x annualized Q2 diluted earnings of $0.41. A lower share price only improves value if the underlying profit outlook remains resilient.

What would make the dip worth buying?

For now, Innodata looks more suitable for a watchlist than an aggressive purchase.

The next useful catalyst would be a quantified management update explaining the sales exposure, any restructuring costs, and the implications for future profitability.

Investors should also examine cash carefully.

Innodata Inc reported $250.4 million in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments as of June 30, but about $134 million after excluding customer prepayments tied to pass-through costs.

Using the headline balance alone will overstate the cash cushion available independently of those obligations.

A small, staged investment could become defensible if management demonstrates that the disruption is contained and growth remains intact.

Until then, preserving buying capacity has value: paying somewhat more after the uncertainty clears may offer a better investment proposition than purchasing INOD stock immediately while the earnings consequences remain unknown.
