McDonald’s earnings hide a key story about consumer spending

written by November 4, 2026

McDonald’s (MCD) delivered a profit beat in its third-quarter results, reporting adjusted earnings per share of $3.57 versus Wall Street expectations of $3.38.

Revenue, however, missed forecasts at $7.16 billion, while US comparable sales slipped 0.2%.

On the surface, the results appeared mixed.

For investors, though, the quarter offered a deeper insight into the state of the global consumer: value-conscious diners are still spending, but they are demanding sharper pricing, forcing even the world’s largest restaurant chain to work harder for every customer visit.

US weakness remains a battleground for McDonald’s

The most important figure in the report was not earnings per share but domestic traffic.

US comparable sales declined 0.2%, extending concerns that lower-income consumers remain selective with discretionary spending despite signs of economic resilience elsewhere.

Still, the result was better than analysts had anticipated, suggesting management’s push toward value offerings is beginning to stabilize demand.

For investors, that distinction matters.

A company can beat earnings through efficiency measures, but sustained shareholder value depends on bringing customers through the door.

Chris Kempczinski, the company’s CEO, pointed to improving trends as the quarter progressed after management intervened with value-focused initiatives.

The implication for restaurant investors is that the industry is increasingly becoming a contest of affordability rather than menu innovation.

Companies able to defend traffic through compelling value propositions are likely to outperform peers still relying on pricing to drive growth.

McDonald’s latest quarter suggests the battle for budget-conscious consumers remains far from over, but the company may be starting to regain momentum.

International markets are driving growth for MCD

While US results attracted the most attention, international markets once again provided the company’s growth engine.

Global comparable sales increased 1.5%, supported largely by stronger performances in international segments.

The International Developmental Licensed Markets division, which includes countries such as China and Japan, posted comparable sales growth of 4.2%, significantly outpacing the domestic business.

That divergence highlights an increasingly important investment theme.

McDonald’s is no longer merely a reflection of the US consumer.

Its earnings power is becoming progressively tied to diverse demand patterns across global markets. When one geography softens, another can provide support.

The international business also demonstrates the strategic value of McDonald’s franchise-heavy model.

Growth in licensed markets allows the company to benefit from expansion and sales gains without assuming the same operating costs faced by company-owned restaurants.

As a result, international strength can help cushion earnings even during periods when US consumer spending becomes less predictable.

Investors looking beyond headline revenue figures may find that geographic diversification remains one of the company’s most underappreciated advantages.

How to play McDonald’s stock moving forward

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the report is that investors are being asked to weigh two competing narratives.

On one hand, revenue missed expectations, and US demand remains under pressure.

On the other, earnings exceeded forecasts, global comparable sales grew, and management signaled improving domestic trends as value initiatives gained traction.

The market’s interpretation will likely depend on whether investors view current softness as cyclical or structural.

If consumers gradually regain spending confidence, McDonald’s could be well positioned to capture renewed traffic thanks to the value platform it has already established.

If budget pressures persist, the company may still hold an advantage because its scale enables it to compete aggressively on price.

Either way, the quarter reinforced a broader reality: McDonald’s stock remains one of the clearest real-time indicators of global consumer health.

This earnings report was not simply about burgers and fries.

It was a window into how households around the world are making spending decisions in an environment where value continues to matter more than ever.
