Costco Wholesale (COST) posted market-beating financials for its fourth quarter last night, which is why the retailer’s share price sits comfortably in the green at writing.
Yet, a deeper dive into COST’s balance sheet suggests it’s actually brewing something even more exciting than strong quarterly figures — at least for income-focused investors.
Versus its year-to-date high, Costco stock is currently down over 15%; but for long-term investors, that muted performance may be the very reason it’s a compelling buy after the Q4 report.

Costco received a “non-recurring” $0.15 per share boost to earnings from International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariff refunds in its fourth quarter.

But the retailer’s release also disclosed that its cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments have ballooned to more than $20.2 billion — up an extraordinary 42.7% on a year-over-year basis.
That makes for a solid reason to load up on COST shares because the company has a broadly known historical playbook of paying massive special dividends every few years when cash builds up (e.g., its $15/share payout in late 2023).
Simply put, framing this earnings report through the lens of a balance sheet “coiled spring” sets up a forward-looking catalyst story for income investors.
Younger consumer is turning to Costco
Beyond the headline numbers, what was also exciting in Costco’s quarterly release was CEO Ron Vachris’ disclosure that members under the age of 40 have gone up by nearly 60% since the COVID pandemic, now representing more than 25% of Costco’s total member base.
That is rather meaningful for the retail giant because its traditional perception is suburban families buying bulk paper towels.
Showing how digitally enabled sales (+19.5% YoY) and delivery partnerships (DoorDash/Uber Eats) are quietly capturing younger, urban households turns a routine retail story into a generational consumer pivot.
All in all, the influx of younger shoppers creates a “compounding growth” engine that Wall Street may still be underestimating.
While under-40 members initially spend less per visit than established suburban families, management emphasized during the call that these cohorts steadily expand their basket sizes as household income and family needs grow over time.
Paired with renewal rates lingering near record highs above 90%, this demographic expansion acts as a long-term multiplier on future membership fee revenue.
How Wall Street recommends playing COST shares
With a cash-fortified balance sheet guarding the downside and a maturing customer base driving top-line lifetime value, COST stock offers an attractive entry point before the next structural leg up.
Note that Wall Street analysts currently rate Costco Wholesale at Overweight with a bullish mean price target of about $1,081, indicating potential upside of roughly 20% from here.
