Meta stock rises 5% as Muse AI agent boosts investor optimism

Meta Platforms shares META climbed on Wednesday after the company introduced Muse, a personal artificial-intelligence agent designed for consumers, as investors assessed the potential impact of the new product on the company’s broader AI strategy.

Meta shares rose about 5.69% in trading toward a seven-week high, making the stock among the top performers in the S&P 500 stocks.

The launch comes as Meta increases spending on artificial intelligence and looks for ways to turn those investments into new products and revenue opportunities.

Meta launches Muse personal AI agent

Meta described Muse as a widely available personal AI agent designed to work on behalf of users.

The company said the tool can help consumers with tasks including booking trips, shopping, and responding to emails.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Muse is being developed to help deliver personal superintelligence to users over time.

Unlike some competing AI agents from companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI, which are largely focused on coding and enterprise applications, Muse is positioned toward everyday consumer tasks.

The product is available as a free app with usage limits, while Meta also offers paid subscriptions for power users.

The company is emphasizing privacy and security as part of the product’s positioning.

KeyBanc identified the interface, Meta’s distribution capabilities and data resources, and its focus on privacy and security as three potential differentiators for Muse.

Analysts see potential from AI product cycle

The Muse launch has prompted a positive response from some analysts.

Mizuho analyst Lloyd Walmsley described the product as the beginning of a substantial product cycle that he believes is not yet fully reflected in Meta’s stock price.

Walmsley also viewed Muse as an important step toward demonstrating a return on Meta’s AI investments, which he identified as a key concern for long-term investors.

KeyBanc reiterated an Overweight rating on Meta and set a $780 price target, indicating a 27% upside from the previous day’s close of $613.48.

The firm said user engagement would be the main measure of Muse’s initial success, with monetization expected to develop over time. This approach is similar to Meta’s strategy for its other applications.

Meta has also been exploring additional ways to generate revenue from its AI infrastructure.

Analysts have suggested that selling excess AI computing capacity could eventually become a multibillion-dollar revenue opportunity.

Heavy AI spending remains in focus

Meta expects to spend between $130 billion and $145 billion this year, with most of that investment directed toward AI programs.

The scale of spending has increased pressure on the company to demonstrate tangible returns from its AI strategy.

Investors were reportedly less impressed with Meta’s AI progress following its second-quarter earnings report in July, while the company also issued weaker guidance for the current quarter.

Muse could therefore provide an important test of whether Meta can translate its AI capabilities into increased engagement and eventually new revenue streams.

The launch could also affect sentiment toward other major technology companies.

Walmsley said Muse could renew concerns around Alphabet’s Gemini AI models and the potential impact of AI on Google Search. He was less concerned about disruption to Amazon and its advertising business.

For Meta, the early focus will be on adoption and engagement as the company attempts to build a consumer AI product while continuing to invest heavily in the technology.
