Searches for ‘foldable smartphone’ surge 1,050% after iPhone Duo launch

Search interest in foldable smartphones has spiked sharply worldwide following Apple’s unveiling of the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, according to Google Trends data.

Global searches for the topic “foldable smartphone” rose 450% over the preceding 24 hours and are up 1,050% compared with the same time last week.

The search surge was mirrored on Wikipedia. The English-language “Foldable smartphone” page received 3,398 views on September 9, compared with an average of around 209 daily views during the previous 29 days — a roughly 16-fold increase.

Search interest spiked, then began cooling

Trends data shows worldwide interest in foldable smartphones hit its peak search index of 100 around the time of Apple’s announcement, then eased through the following hours, settling in the 50 to 60 range before drifting lower toward the 30s by midday.

The pattern is typical of a major product launch: a sharp spike in searches right after the news breaks, followed by a gradual decline as initial curiosity fades.

Where interest is highest

China ranks first in worldwide search interest in foldable smartphones over the past 24 hours, followed by Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Taiwan, out of 55 regions tracked by Google Trends.

Among related search queries, “foldable” ranks highest, followed by “iphone,” “foldable iphone,” “iphone foldable” and “apple,” pointing to Apple’s launch as the driving force behind the broader foldable category’s search surge rather than interest in foldable phones generally.

Google Trends also flagged several queries as “breakout,” meaning searches for them are rising quickly, including “iPhone Duo release date,” “iPhone Duo case,” “iPhone 18 Duo,” and searches related to Motorola’s upcoming foldable phone, suggesting Apple’s entry is drawing attention to rival foldables too.

What Apple announced

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on Wednesday, its first foldable iPhone, priced at $1,999 and set to ship in October.

The device has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, with an under-display camera built into the inner screen.

Apple said it used a custom nanotexture finish to reduce glare and make the fold crease less visible, along with a grade 5 titanium hinge built from more than 100 components.

The iPhone Duo uses Touch ID rather than Face ID, and can also be unlocked using an Apple Watch.

It runs on Apple’s A20 Pro chip and C2 modem.

Why this matters for the foldable market

IDC’s Francisco Jeronimo said Apple’s launch marks a turning point for the foldable segment and should boost category awareness and consumer interest, even though he expects foldables to remain a niche category.

IDC projects the global foldables market will grow 30% in 2026, largely because of Apple’s entry, with average selling prices for foldables running roughly three times higher than standard smartphones.

The search surge suggests that effect is already visible, at least in the hours right after launch, with interest spreading beyond Apple’s own device into competing brands like Motorola as consumers explore the broader foldable category for the first time.

Supply, not demand, may limit early iPhone Duo sales

The iPhone Duo enters at $1,999, undercutting pre-launch expectations.

That pricing puts it directly against established foldable rivals, but supply looks tight.

The device will launch in just 28 markets at first, while the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will reach over 70 markets right away.

Gerrit Schneemann, an analyst at Counterpoint Research, said sales volumes for the Duo will almost certainly be constrained by limited supply rather than limited demand, meaning early buyers should expect long wait times.

Data methodology: Invezz analysed Google Trends data on September 10, 2026. Trends measures relative search interest rather than absolute search volumes, with “Breakout” indicating growth above 5,000%. Wikipedia data comes from Wikimedia Pageviews. The September 9 total of 3,398 views was compared with the previous 29-day daily average.
