Berkshire nearly doubles stake in struggling homebuilder stock

by September 28, 2026
written by September 28, 2026

Berkshire Hathaway has aggressive plans for the US housing market.

By late September 2026, the conglomerate virtually doubled its position in Lennar, accumulating 25.9 million combined shares.

Valued at roughly $2.1 billion, this stake grants Berkshire a massive 10.9% ownership footprint in the nation’s second-largest homebuilder.

Because crossing the 10% threshold required fast-tracked SEC disclosures, recent filings showed Berkshire loading up on $348 million worth of LEN stock in a single September week despite poor sentiment, falling revenue, and challenging 7% mortgage rates.

What attracted Berkshire to Lennar stock?

Berkshire’s buying spree highlights an opportunistic move into deeply discounted cyclicals, widely regarded by Wall Street as a classic value play.

Handled likely by portfolio manager Ted Weschler, the purchase aligns with the broader corporate strategy spearheaded by CEO Greg Abel.

Abel oversaw a landmark $6.8 billion cash acquisition of Taylor Morrison Home in June 2026 to combine its site-built homebuilding assets with manufactured home maker Clayton Homes

Alongside industrial subsidiaries like Johns Manville, Acme Brick, Benjamin Moore, and Shaw Industries, Berkshire is fortifying an end-to-end housing ecosystem.

Management envisions five to ten years ahead – believing that persistent structural demand for US homeownership will outlast high mortgage rates and temporary affordability hurdles.

LEN shares retain strong fundamental value

Lennar stock offers an exceptionally compelling balance sheet for patient, long-term capital.

Trading down 20% year-to-date and off nearly 50% from its peak, it presents an attractive bargain, below its book value.

While recent quarterly earnings missed expectations and revenue contracted 8%, Lennar maintains scale, operational efficiency, and market share that position it to capture outsized gains when macro conditions ease.

While experts believe Berkshire would ideally prefer an outright takeover for around $25 billion, Chairman Stuart Miller’s 70% control over Class B shares blocks a hostile buyout – leaving open market share accumulation as the premier strategy to ride the firm’s cyclical rebound.

Wall Street disagrees with Berkshire’s view on Lennar

While Wall Street focuses more on current quarter earnings misses and elevated borrowing costs, Berkshire continues leveraging its huge cash balance to buy “best-in-class” real estate assets at a notable discount.

The aggressive expansion into Lennar demonstrates complete confidence that systemic structural housing shortages across the US will ultimately prevail over short-term macroeconomic pressures.

As mortgage rates inevitably stabilize and buyer demand normalizes, Berkshire Hathaway’s multi-billion dollar stake in national builders will serve as a powerful profit driver for decades to come.

Investors should note, however, that Wall Street analysts are not at all constructive on LEN stock for the near- to medium-term.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the consensus rating on Lennar sits at Underweight currently – with the mean price target of nearly $77 indicating the company is overvalued at present levels.
