Nvidia, AMD and Intel stocks fall again in premarket: what went wrong overnight?

Nvidia, AMD and Intel stocks came under renewed pressure in Tuesday’s US premarket trading, threatening to reverse a semiconductor recovery that lasted barely one session.

Nasdaq 100 futures slipped around 0.3% after the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.11% on Monday and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 1.61%. The reversal followed heavy selling in Asian chip stocks, while Brent crude climbed above $110 a barrel.

The renewed weakness reflects a problem extending beyond volatile share prices.

Investors still believe artificial intelligence requires more computing power, but they are questioning whether customers can earn enough from that investment to justify its cost.

Asian selling punctures Wall Street’s rebound

Monday offered a welcome break for chip investors. Nvidia advanced 1.4%, AMD gained 1.7% and Intel rose 2.4% as bargain hunters returned after last week’s sharp technology sell-off.

The optimism failed to travel to Asia. South Korea’s KOSPI fell approximately 3.7% on Tuesday, led lower by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.

Newly listed AI infrastructure provider Elice plunged around 30% on its market debut, exposing continued reluctance to finance expensive expansion.

European semiconductor shares also weakened. Meanwhile, higher oil prices threatened to keep inflation elevated and complicate the interest-rate outlook, adding pressure to companies whose valuations depend on future growth.

Ninghui Liu, State Street Investment Management’s Asia-Pacific research head, told Reuters on Tuesday that investors were no longer disputing AI adoption. Instead, they wanted to know whether infrastructure spending would generate returns exceeding its financing costs.

AI debt adds another risk for chipmakers

The industry’s financial challenge begins with the enormous cost of building AI capacity. Companies must purchase processors, secure electricity and construct data centres well before customers deliver sufficient revenue.

Smaller cloud operators often borrow heavily to finance that buildout. Rising interest costs can force them to delay projects, even when demand for computing remains healthy.

Dario Perkins, managing director of global macro at TS Lombard, warned in a note that debt across parts of the AI ecosystem could reach $2 trillion by late 2027.

Perkins also highlighted semiconductor producers’ exposure to swings between shortages and oversupply.

Customers ordering extra chips to avoid shortages could leave manufacturers facing excess inventory if investment slows.

Nvidia dominates AI accelerators, while AMD is competing to win more data-centre orders. Intel also faces manufacturing and server-chip turnaround challenges.

Meta earnings could provide the next turning point

Wednesday’s Meta results will offer an early test of whether major technology companies intend to sustain their ambitious AI spending plans.

Investors will examine projected capital expenditure alongside evidence that advertising, cloud services and AI products are delivering measurable financial returns. Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon face similar questions in upcoming reports.

Intel’s own quarterly results are scheduled for 29 October, providing a separate opportunity to assess its manufacturing recovery.

CNBC commentator Jim Cramer said Monday’s bounce was encouraging but insufficient to establish a bottom. “The charts need to get better,” he said.

Sustained spending guidance could revive confidence in chip demand. Any suggestion of delayed projects or weaker returns would raise fresh concerns about future orders.
