SMCI stock soars 17% on $4B sales forecast hike, but analysts are still cautious

Super Micro Computer stock (NASDAQ: SMCI) surged as much as 17% in extended trading on Tuesday after the AI server maker raised its quarterly sales forecast by $4 billion.

The company now expects revenue of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion for the September quarter, up from its previous guidance of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. Projected gross margins also improved to 12%–12.5%.

The surprise offered relief after a bruising technology sell-off. Yet analysts remain divided over whether exceptional server sales can translate into sustainable cash generation and profits.

SMCI stock: Why the $4 billion surprise matters

At the midpoint, Supermicro’s new revenue forecast stands at $19 billion, a 26.7% increase from its earlier $15 billion estimate. That would represent growth of roughly 279% from the corresponding quarter last year.

Management attributed the upgrade primarily to stronger demand for AI platforms. Investors also welcomed the improving product and customer mix, which lifted gross margin expectations from 10.4%–10.8%.

The optimism spread to competitors. Dell Technologies and Hewlett Packard Enterprise rose in after-hours trading, suggesting traders viewed the announcement as evidence of broader demand for AI servers.

Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani considered the update another encouraging indication of AI infrastructure spending, according to MarketWatch on Tuesday.

Still, the forecast is preliminary and unaudited. Supermicro cautioned that final results could differ as it completes its financial statements.

Higher margins do not settle the cash question

The company’s updated guidance also points to significantly higher gross profit. Revenue of $19 billion at a 12.25% gross margin would generate approximately $2.33 billion, against $1.59 billion under the previous midpoint assumptions.

That implies around $738 million in additional gross profit before operating expenses, taxes and financing costs.

However, the projected margin still trails the 17.5% recorded in the June quarter, highlighting how profitability can vary with the mix of customers and equipment sold.

Cash flow presents a bigger concern. Supermicro reported $39.1 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue but used approximately $6.81 billion in operating cash. After capital expenditure, free cash flow was negative by roughly $7 billion.

The June quarter generated $747 million in operating cash, highlighting how working-capital needs can vary as orders are fulfilled.

Growing server sales require large purchases of expensive chips and other components, often before customers settle invoices.

Analysts noted on Tuesday that some growth could reflect market-share shifts or the fulfilment of previously acquired components rather than an equivalent acceleration in industry-wide spending.

November earnings will test the rally

Supermicro will release full fiscal first-quarter results on 3 November, when investors can examine operating cash flow, inventory and the sources of its sales surprise.

Customer concentration makes that scrutiny important. One buyer accounted for 28.1% of revenue in fiscal 2026, according to the company’s annual filing.

Any slowdown at a major customer could materially affect orders. Investors will also want to know whether this customer drove the upgrade.

The company appointed former Western Digital executive Mark Long as finance chief on 15 October, following earlier scrutiny of financial controls.

Wall Street remains unconvinced that the latest sales forecast settles the investment case. Data compiled by S&P Global show a Hold consensus among 18 analysts, with targets ranging from $15 to $60.
