Why MercadoLibre stock’s post-election dip is a buying opportunity

MercadoLibre (MELI) stock tanked in trading on Monday after Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated Flávio Bolsonaro, upending expectations for a more market-friendly administration.

MELI shares are down more than 10% as of writing as investors continue to unwind bets on tighter government spending and lower corporate taxes.

For long-term investors, though, the retreat creates a potential buying opportunity: MercadoLibre’s latest operating results suggest its competitive position is strengthening, even as Brazil’s political outlook becomes more uncertain.

Why buy the dip in MercadoLibre stock

The strongest argument for buying the dip in MELI shares comes from what Brazilian customers were doing before the election.

In Q2, MercadoLibre’s domestic gross merchandise volume increased 39% year over year – while items sold climbed 56%.

That suggests demand was expanding through transaction volumes, rather than simply higher prices or favorable exchange rates.

Management attributed solid engagement to initiatives including a lower free-shipping threshold.

Newer customer groups were buying across more categories and showing better retention than earlier cohorts.

That matters because repeat purchasing gives MercadoLibre opportunities to spread delivery and customer-acquisition costs across more orders.

Political uncertainty can depress the valuation investors assign to that growth, but Monday’s election result alone provides little evidence that these customer habits have reversed.

Payments and shopping reinforce the investment case

MELI’s appeal extends beyond its marketplace. Mercado Pago reached 88 million monthly active users in the second quarter, up 30%, while payment volume reached approximately $101 billion.

More revealing is how the businesses interact. Customers using both the marketplace and Mercado Pago generated 70% more merchandise volume per user than marketplace-only customers.

The investment implication is that MercadoLibre Inc. is strongly positioned to “deepen” existing relationships alongside recruiting new users.

A shopper can become a payments customer, creating additional opportunities to earn revenue from the same relationship.

Mexico also offers another source of expansion that could help MercadoLibre shares stage a major comeback: currency-neutral merchandise volume increased 26% in the said quarter.

That provides a useful counterweight to Brazil, although it can’t insulate consolidated results from a Brazilian slowdown or currency weakness.

Should you load up on MELI shares today?

A lower share price improves the entry point, but the “next test” is whether MercadoLibre Inc can translate expansion into stronger earnings.

Q2 operating profit declined 17% to $683 million, leaving a 6.7% operating margin. Management attributed much of the pressure to investment in shipping, pricing and customer acquisition.

Investors therefore need evidence that these initiatives eventually earn an adequate return.

Meanwhile, credit deserves particular attention. The loan portfolio exceeded $16 billion, although its 15–90-day delinquency ratio remained near historical lows at 7%.

That said, a tougher economy could test that underwriting record.

All in all, the case for buying MELI stock is consequently strongest for patient investors willing to accumulate gradually.

Continued customer growth, improving investment economics and controlled credit losses would justify looking beyond the election shock.

Persistent margin deterioration would weaken that argument, regardless of how far shares have fallen.
