DraftKings stock just lost 20%: the real story isn’t the earnings miss

by November 6, 2026
written by November 6, 2026

DraftKings (DKNG) shares opened sharply lower on Friday after the sports betting giant reported its fiscal Q3 earnings that missed Wall Street estimates and lowered its full-year guidance as well.

Revenue came in at $1.329 billion versus expectations of about $1.39 billion, while adjusted losses were also deeper than analysts had forecast.

Investors reacted swiftly, wiping billions from DKNG’s market cap. But the headline numbers tell only part of the story.

The bigger question for shareholders is whether DraftKings is “deliberately” sacrificing near-term profitability to pursue a potentially much larger opportunity in prediction markets.

DraftKings earnings miss is a strategy reset

At first glance, DraftKings release gave investors plenty of reasons to hit the sell button. The firm’s adjusted EBITDA slipped into negative territory as spending accelerated.

Plus, management reduced its sales ($6.35 billion to $6.55 billion) and EBITDA outlook as well.

Yet, what stands out is not weak customer demand. Monthly unique payers came in up 13% to 41 million, and average revenue per user increased to $109.

Those are not metrics typically associated with a fading business.

Instead, DKNG is making a conscious decision to redirect significant resources toward Predictions – its rapidly expanding prediction-markets platform.

In other words, investors were not simply reacting to missed estimates.

They were reacting to the realization that DraftKings is entering a new investment cycle, one that could weigh on profits far longer than Wall Street previously anticipated.

Significance of Predictions for DKNG shares

The most revealing part of the earnings release was buried behind the disappointing guidance.

Management disclosed that more than 1.6 million customers have engaged with its new Predictions offering this year – while annualized prediction-market consumer volume reached $10.1 billion in October.

The company said it has already become the third-largest predictions exchange by total volume.

Those figures help explain why executives are willing to accept hundreds of millions of dollars in additional investment.

Prediction markets sit at the intersection of sports betting, financial markets, and event forecasting, opening an entirely new revenue stream beyond traditional wagering.

For investors, this changes the valuation debate. DraftKings can no longer be viewed solely as a sports betting operator.

Increasingly, the stock is becoming a bet on management’s ability to build a dominant platform in an emerging market that remains largely untapped.

The challenge is that such opportunities are difficult to model, making near-term earnings visibility much lower.

What DraftKings stock investors should watch next?

The irony of this sell-off is that the earnings report may have strengthened the long-term bull case even as it damaged short-term sentiment.

DraftKings introduced 2027 revenue guidance of $7.35 billion to $7.75 billion and forecast adjusted EBITDA of $800 million to $1.0 billion despite continuing investment in Predictions.

That suggests management sees today’s spending less as an expense and more as customer acquisition for a business it believes can become materially larger over time.

The market, however, is demanding proof before granting that benefit of the doubt.

Going forward, three metrics matter more than quarterly earnings beats or misses: growth in prediction-market users, the pace of trading volume expansion, and evidence that those customers can be monetized profitably.

If those indicators continue trending upward, this week’s plunge could eventually look like a temporary reaction to transition costs.

If they stall, investors may conclude that DraftKings traded a highly profitable future for an expensive experiment. For now, Wall Street is voting with caution.
