Higher rates may not be bad for biotech stocks: find out more

Wall Street’s prevailing narrative suggests that monetary tightening and higher benchmark interest rates pose an insurmountable headwind for biotech stocks.

However, Mizuho’s senior analyst Jared Holz argues that recent Fed hike carries minimal structural significance for the sector.

Speaking recently with CNBC, Holz emphasized that markets routinely overstate the direct impact of monetary policy on biotech performance.

He views the widespread belief that elevated rates naturally stifle drug development valuation as a psychological misinterpretation rather than a fundamental reality urging investors to look beyond macro rate movements when evaluating industry health.

Interest rates and biotech stocks: what historical data tells us

According to Jared Holz, market data from the past two decades suggests there is no “meaningful” statistical correlation between interest rates and biotech stocks’ performance.

Wall Street’s concerns stem from the unique market conditions of the COVID pandemic era, when near-zero interest rates coincided with a massive surge in healthcare valuations.

Investors came to treat that rare confluence as a “universal rule” rather than an isolated historical event.

When removing that atypical anomaly from the two-decade chart, the relationship between rates and biotech stocks effectively dissolves.

The recent sector weakness reflects self-fulfilling investor perception rather than true fundamental deterioration, the Mizuho analyst noted.

What really determines biotech stocks’ performance

Holz remains convinced that corporate execution – not interest rates – and portfolio diversification are dictating sector winners.

For example, Novo Nordisk shares face headwinds, with shares down about 15% this year, largely because markets view Eli Lilly as the early winner of the obesity drug boom.

Outside of its flagship Wegovy and Cagrisema pipeline, NVO must showcase broader therapeutic scope through aggressive business development.

While Novo’s attempt to acquire Metsera failed after being outbid by Pfizer, strategic deals outside the core weight-loss category could reshape its trajectory.

Investors are increasingly looking beyond single-theme narratives, placing higher value on active dealmaking and pipeline diversification over weight-loss speculation.

Shifting focus toward pragmatic business development

Market leadership across big pharma is actively pivoting away from crowded mega-trends toward strategic deal execution.

While high-flying obesity pure-plays have stumbled, diversified giants like Merck have actually rallied about 40% year-to-date following a series of targeted business development transactions.

By completing five strategic deals over the past year, Merck has successfully diversified its topline exposure away from its Keytruda concentration.

Conversely, Lilly’s smaller transactions have yet to meaningfully boost topline sales – and Novo’s operational missteps have drawn skepticism.

Ultimately, sustained revenue growth and disciplined M&A remain far more consequential drivers for biotechnology and pharmaceutical returns than Federal Reserve rate trajectories.

In short, for investors watching biotech stocks, the takeaway is straightforward: rather than fixating on macro policy, long-term performance hinges on clinical milestone execution and disciplined capital allocation.
