Netflix earnings preview: Q4 outlook, ad growth, margins in focus as stock falls 23%

written by October 19, 2026

Netflix is set to report its third-quarter 2026 results after Tuesday’s market close, with investors looking for signs that advertising growth and improving profitability can offset slowing revenue growth and intensifying competition from YouTube.

The streaming giant’s shares have fallen approximately 23% year to date, raising the stakes for its latest earnings report as analysts reassess its growth prospects and valuation.

Attention will centre on quarterly revenue, operating margins, advertising monetisation and management’s outlook for the final three months of the year.

Analysts expect Netflix to report revenue of $12.87 billion, an increase of 11.8% from a year earlier.

Revenue growth slowdown puts Q4 outlook in focus

Netflix reported revenue of $12.56 billion in the second quarter, up 13.4% year over year, while diluted earnings per share of $0.80 edged past the consensus estimate of $0.79.

For the third quarter, management guided for revenue of approximately $12.86 billion and earnings per share of $0.82, below previous Wall Street expectations.

The outlook triggered a sell-off after the company’s previous results.

Revenue growth has slowed over recent quarters, falling from 17.6% in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 16.2% in the first quarter of 2026 and 13.4% in the second quarter.

The third-quarter revenue guidance implies further deceleration to about 11.7%.

“Overall, we’re not growing as fast as I want us to,” co-CEO Ted Sarandos said recently at Bloomberg’s 2026 Screentime event in Los Angeles.

“We are, though, also doing things that create a lot of headwind to that number,” he added.

Investors will thus assess whether the company can stabilise growth or whether its expansion is slowing faster than anticipated.

The fourth-quarter outlook could prove particularly important.

Netflix’s full-year 2026 revenue guidance stands at $51 billion to $51.4 billion.

Advertising growth offers a potential boost

Advertising remains a key part of Netflix’s strategy to diversify revenue beyond subscriptions.

The company expects its advertising business to generate approximately $3 billion in 2026, roughly double the previous year’s figure.

Even so, advertising would account for only about 6% of annual sales.

Netflix has taken several steps to expand its advertising platform.

It concluded its 2026 US upfront advertising negotiations in August with commitments nearly doubling, secured its first Media Rating Council accreditation for Netflix Ads Suite and made Pause Ads available programmatically across major demand-side platforms, according to Zacks.

Investors will look for evidence that these initiatives are translating into sustained revenue growth and improving monetisation.

Jefferies maintained its Buy rating on Netflix last week, with an $85 price target, arguing that the company has significant room to expand monetisation, margins and share repurchases.

Analyst Brent Thill expects annual revenue growth of 11% between 2026 and 2029, driven by subscriber additions, price increases and advertising.

Jefferies forecasts advertising revenue rising to $7.5 billion by 2029 from $3 billion in 2026.

Thill also sees scope for further subscription price increases.

Netflix’s standard plan costs about 60% less than competing services on a price-per-viewing-hour basis in the US, he noted, potentially giving the company room to raise prices.

Margin expansion remains central to the investment case

While revenue growth has slowed, Netflix’s operating margins have continued to improve.

The company reported a 33.4% operating margin in the second quarter and guided for 33.2% in the third quarter.

Its full-year operating margin target stands at 31.5%, and investors will watch for any changes to that forecast.

Morningstar senior equity analyst Matthew Dolgin has identified margin expansion as a key component of the investment case.

“Ongoing margin expansion is a key component of the thesis behind investing in Netflix,” Dolgin said.

The company’s ability to control content costs while growing advertising revenue could help sustain profitability even as sales growth moderates.

Jefferies forecasts approximately 190 basis points of annual operating margin expansion through 2029.

Thill also expects more than $50 billion in cumulative free cash flow over three years, potentially providing substantial capacity for share repurchases.

Why international markets matter

Some analysts have sought to highlight Netflix’s international opportunity amid slowing growth.

Morningstar expects Netflix to deliver a compound annual revenue growth rate of about 10% through 2030, followed by mid-single-digit growth in the latter five years of its 10-year forecast.

“We expect international markets to lead this growth, given the opportunities they still have to add new members,” Dolgin wrote.

Deutsche Bank recently upgraded the stock to Buy from Hold, even though it lowered its PT to $95 from $100, with analyst Bryan Kraft noting that international engagement has increased year over year in each of the past four six-month periods.

Kraft believes Netflix’s global scale, brand and production capabilities could support a broader “Netflix As A Platform” opportunity over time.

Growth across Netflix’s four reported geographic regions will therefore be another important metric, particularly as international markets account for much of the remaining subscriber expansion opportunity.

Management changes and analyst downgrades add pressure

Netflix is also undergoing organisational changes.

Last week, the company announced that former Disney executive Peter Rice would become chief content officer, overseeing its global content organisation, including scripted and unscripted series, films and live events.

He will replace 10-year Netflix veteran Bela Bajaria, who most recently led the company’s global content team, including its live sports strategy.

The company also announced plans on October 14 to cut approximately 1,000 jobs, or about 6% of its workforce, increasing scrutiny of cost discipline as content spending remains significant.

Recent analyst actions have reflected divided views on the stock.

Wells Fargo downgraded Netflix to Underweight in September, citing the possibility of declining viewing hours for its leading original programmes.

HSBC lowered its rating to Hold from Buy and cut its price target to $76.

Deutsche Bank subsequently upgraded the stock to Buy with a $95 target, while Goldman Sachs maintained its Buy rating with a $90 target.

KeyBanc, Morgan Stanley, Barclays and Huber Research have also lowered their price targets this month.

For Netflix, Tuesday’s results will test whether advertising growth and margin expansion can offset slowing sales and heightened competition.

Investors will also look for signs that the company’s international growth, pricing power and cash generation can sustain earnings expansion over the coming years.
