These 2 dividend stocks are worth owning for a lifetime

A dividend stock earns its place in a long-term portfolio by doing more than mailing shareholders a quarterly check.

It needs a business that can fund those payments while investing sufficiently to stay “competitive.”

Procter & Gamble (PG) and Stryker (SYK) offer two compelling approaches: household essentials that generate repeat purchases and medical technologies supported by enduring healthcare needs.

Their latest earnings underline why both deserve consideration from longer-term investors seeking income that can grow over decades.

Procter & Gamble

Procter & Gamble’s appeal begins in the shopping basket. Brands such as Tide, Pampers and Crest serve recurring needs, giving the giant frequent opportunities to turn customer loyalty into cash.

Its October 22 earnings release offered fresh evidence of that resilience.

Q1 sales rose 4% to about $23.3 billion, while organic sales also came in up 4%.

Core earnings reached $2 a share, up 1%.

Crucially for income investors, operating cash flow came in at $5.8 billion, comfortably exceeding the quarter’s $2.6 billion in dividend payments.

That cash generation supports a remarkable record: P&G has increased its dividend for 70 years. Its quarterly payment of $1.0885 translates into an annualized $4.354 per share.

Reinvesting those distributions can gradually increase your stake – allowing subsequent dividend increases to work across a larger holding.

There are limits to the story, though. P&G now anticipates a $1.4 billion after-tax commodity cost headwind in fiscal 2027, illustrating how inflation can squeeze even powerful brands.

Nevertheless, management still expects to distribute more than $10 billion through dividends this fiscal year.

The investment case rests on that ability to keep generating cash through difficult conditions, with the purchase price remaining an important determinant of eventual returns.

Stryker Corp

Stryker stock offers a different attraction – an expanding earnings base that could support larger shareholder payments over time.

Its implants, surgical equipment and Mako robotic technology connect the business to demand for improved mobility and more advanced medical care.

The latest reported results, covering the second quarter of 2026, showed revenue increasing 9.4% to $6.6 billion.

Organic sales climbed 9%, driven by higher unit volume, while adjusted earnings per share advanced 17.9% to $3.69.

Adjusted operating margin also expanded 170 basis points to 27.4%, showing that profit growth outpaced sales growth.

Its quarterly dividend stands at $0.88 per share, or $3.52 annualized.

Against management’s full-year adjusted earnings guidance of $14.95 to $15.10 per share, that represents a payout of roughly 23.4% to 23.5%.

Although adjusted earnings are different from available cash, the relatively low ratio suggests room to balance dividends with reinvestment.

Investors will get the next financial update on October 29. Hospital budgets, product quality, and acquisition execution remain relevant risks.

Still, Stryker’s combination of volume growth and improving profitability makes it an appealing candidate for patient investors.

A lifetime holding requires periodic scrutiny, but this business offers persuasive reasons to keep watching – and potentially collecting growing dividends – for years.
