Why is Critical Metals stock soaring and what comes next?

Critical Metals (CRML) shares ripped higher on Monday morning after the Trump administration announced a historic security pact between the US, Denmark, and Greenland.

This geopolitical milestone derisks CRML’s flagship Tanbreez project in southern Greenland – one of the world’s largest undeveloped heavy rare earth deposits.

Despite the huge surge today, Critical Metals stock is trading at about half its price in late January.

What the announcement means for Critical Metals stock

Investors are cheering CRML shares mostly because of the formalization of a defense and security framework covering Greenland, designed to safeguard the critical supply chain for battery and defense technologies.

For the Nasdaq-listed firm, the landmark agreement acts as a massive geopolitical tailwind.

Tanbreez holds “massive reserves of heavy rare earth elements” essential for permanent magnets, military defense hardware, and AI hardware infrastructure.

By formally aligning Greenland’s mineral security with Western defense interests, the framework improves the likelihood of future non-dilutive federal grants, fast-tracked permitting support, and long-term Western offtake contracts.

Combined with Critical Metals’ recent study on a $4.5 billion NPV joint-venture rare earth refinery in Romania, investors are increasingly viewing the stock as key to breaking China’s monopoly on critical minerals.

Is it worth chasing the momentum in CRML shares today?

While the headline news is unquestionably bullish, investors are recommended caution in chasing today’s rally as it carries substantial short-term risks.

CRML remains a “pre-revenue”, development-stage miner with ongoing cash burn and an overall unprofitable profile – meaning its valuation relies more on future project execution than current fundamentals.

Short-term trading spikes on geopolitical headlines frequently suffer from sharp gap-fills once the initial hype cools down.

Plus, development-stage miners often leverage rapid price surges to issue equity and raise capital, introducing potential share dilution.

Even from a technical perspective, Critical Metals shares now have their relative strength index (RSI) set in the late 60s, indicating they’re now approaching overbought territory that often results in near-term profit-taking.

How to play Critical Metals at current levels?

In the long run, CRML stock’s trajectory will depend on fundamental operational execution rather than political headlines.

The immediate event to watch is the October 22 shareholder vote on the acquisition of European Lithium Limited’s remaining stakes, a key consolidation move slated for completion by November.

Beyond the merger, the ultimate proving ground for Critical Metals will be the upcoming release of the Tanbreez Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) before year-end.

A strong DFS, coupled with concrete debt financing or federal grant allocations, will provide the fundamental backbone needed to sustain valuation.

Until those tangible operational milestones are met, CRML remains a high-beta, headline-driven vehicle for speculative investors.

Interestingly, though, Wall Street nonetheless rates it at Moderate Buy, with the mean price target of $16 indicating massive upside potential from current levels.
