Oracle stock’s next big AI opportunity may have nothing to do with data centres

by October 20, 2026
written by October 20, 2026

Oracle announced a healthcare artificial intelligence collaboration with AstraZeneca on Tuesday, expanding its ambitions beyond data centres as investors scrutinise the cost of its cloud infrastructure expansion.

The companies plan to explore technology that helps clinicians identify patients for clinical trials, improve treatment pathways and connect medical research with routine care.

The agreement carries no disclosed financial value and remains non-binding. Nevertheless, it highlights a business opportunity for Oracle: selling specialised healthcare technology to hospitals and pharmaceutical companies rather than relying solely on computing capacity for AI developers.

AstraZeneca opens a different AI market

The partnership combines Oracle’s healthcare data, cloud systems and AI tools with AstraZeneca’s drug development and clinical expertise.

Its first planned programme targets hypertension care and clinical research in Abu Dhabi alongside healthcare group M42. The companies want to help doctors identify patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure and match eligible participants to trials.

Projects could address cancer, cardiovascular conditions, respiratory diseases and rare disorders across the US, Europe and Middle East.

Oracle chief executive Mike Sicilia said in Tuesday’s announcement that “some of the most important opportunities for AI are in healthcare”, where better use of data could improve patient outcomes.

AstraZeneca chief executive Pascal Soriot similarly argued that linking scientific research with clinical technology could identify patients earlier and improve trial recruitment.

The commercial appeal lies in embedding AI in everyday medical work, potentially making Oracle’s software more valuable to healthcare customers.

Healthcare growth comes with unanswered questions

Oracle expects its healthcare business to return to double-digit growth in fiscal 2027, helped by AI-enabled improvements to its Cerner healthcare management systems.

AstraZeneca could broaden that opportunity into clinical research, drug safety monitoring and use of real-world evidence to guide care.

However, neither company has committed to revenue targets, a contract value or a rollout timetable. A non-binding agreement is not a guaranteed commercial order.

The sensitive nature of medical information adds a hurdle. AstraZeneca said it would not receive patient-identifiable data, while projects must satisfy legal, ethical, privacy and regulatory requirements before proceeding.

The companies intend to establish shared governance and measures to assess outcomes, but success will depend on whether hospitals can use the tools effectively and whether buyers ultimately pay for them.

Healthcare AI could create recurring software revenue, although the announcement offers no basis for estimating how much.

Can healthcare offset Oracle’s infrastructure costs?

Oracle’s push into medical applications comes against a demanding financial backdrop.

The company reported negative free cash flow of $23.7 billion in fiscal 2026 after investment in cloud infrastructure. It also outlined plans in June to raise approximately $40 billion through debt and equity financing in fiscal 2027.

S&P Global lowered Oracle’s credit rating to BBB- in July, the lowest investment-grade level, citing pressure from AI spending.

Mark Habib, S&P’s global head of digital infrastructure, warned that “there is more (debt) out there that we are not seeing” in complex AI financing arrangements, according to Reuters. He said the agency saw no immediate reason to change ratings.

Oracle said customer prepayments and customer-supplied chips reduce how much capital it must raise for data centres.

Healthcare software may eventually deliver less capital-intensive revenue, but it still depends on secure cloud infrastructure and faces lengthy adoption cycles.
